RED WOLF — Canis rufus

The red wolf is a distinct North American wolf species and one of the most distinctive canids of the southeastern United States. It is generally smaller and more lightly built than the gray wolf, with a longer, lankier body, relatively long legs and ears, and a narrow head. Its coat commonly contains reddish, cinnamon, tawny, gray, and black tones, with the strongest reddish coloration often appearing around the ears, head, and legs. Adults generally weigh about 40–80 pounds and stand around 26 inches at the shoulder.

Red wolves are highly social animals that generally live in small family-based packs. They hunt a variety of prey, including white-tailed deer, raccoons, nutria, opossums, rabbits, birds, and rodents. They communicate through howling, barks, growls, yaps, body language, and scent marking. Their ability to move quietly through dense vegetation and their reddish-gray countershaded coats help them blend into the forests, wetlands, and coastal landscapes they evolved in.

SPECIAL DETAILS

APPEARANCE

Red wolves are typically smaller and more slender than gray wolves, with long legs, relatively large ears, and a narrower build. Their coats vary considerably but commonly combine reddish-brown, cinnamon, gray, buff, and black.

HABITAT & RANGE

Historically, red wolves occupied a large portion of the southeastern United States, using forests, swamps, coastal prairies, and other mixed habitats. Their present wild range is restricted to a designated recovery area in eastern North Carolina.

DIET

Red wolves are carnivores with a varied diet. Their prey can include white-tailed deer, raccoons, nutria, opossums, rabbits, birds, and rodents. They may also consume carrion and occasionally insects, berries, or other plant material.

SOCIAL LIFE

Red wolves generally live in family groups of roughly two to ten individuals, usually consisting of a breeding pair and their offspring. Pack members cooperate in movement, hunting, raising young, and territorial defense. Red wolves are also notably shy around humans.

WHAT MAKES THE RED WOLF SPECIAL?

The red wolf is special because it represents a distinct wolf lineage found only in the United States. Its combination of reddish coloration, slender build, long legs, and social behavior gives it an appearance that falls between what many people traditionally associate with gray wolves and coyotes. Its adaptability to forests, wetlands, and coastal environments also sets it apart from many larger northern wolves.
